Folk Art painting of Native Americans in a canoe along a river or lake at sunset. The painting shows two male Indians in headdress at either end of the canoe and a woman Indian in the middle. Trees in the foreground are stylized with sparse leaves and snakelike vines. The sunset sky is painted in graduating tones of red, white and blue. The coolest part (I think) is the hidden large Indian formed by the rocks to the left—he is seen in profile—reminds me of the Indian on a Buffalo Head nickel—not sure if this is intentional or incidental, regardless it is cool! (If you do not see it, look at the last image above and watch the overlay.)
Though the work is not attributed to Thomas Chambers, the overall color and tonal sensibilities and the stylized trees and rocks, relate to his work.
Condition: Very Good-Excellent. Abrasions from the frame along the edges and the lower left corner has some losses (as seen in images). Under UV there appears to be a few minor spots of in-painting in the trees and rocks, but they are not detected at the macro level. Frame is a period Eastelake frame and possibly original.
