Indian Returning At Dusk

Ralph Albert Blakelock (American, New York, 1847 - 1919)
Oil on board
Circa: 1885
Size: 2 7/8" x 6 3/8" (site); 5 3/4" x 9 1/4" (frame)
A beautiful small work where Blakelock gives us one of his glowing, complex studies of nature at dusk and a solitary Indian figure at day's end returning to his encampment. A real jewel. Signed lower left "R. A. Blakelock" in arrow.

Ralph Albert Blakelock was a storied figure...truly suffering for his art and just trying to get by, living in abject poverty...while dealers made thousands off his talent - he eventually had a break down and was institutionalized.

#427 in University of Nebraska's Blakelock Inventory.
