American Abstract Folk Art Hooked Rug

Scrap textiles hooked through burlap
Circa: 1930s
Size: 43 1/2" x 27"
This, likely African American, improvisational hooked rug expands and flows with energy eminating from the from the center. Triangular fields are divided with complex color shifts, both subtle and starkly contrasting. If we look closely, we can see scraps of patterned suiting. The funny thing about this one is that it looks convincingly like an Australian Aboriginal painting; however, it’s hooked and from Ohio.
